contrary to the very end

The hospital just called us at 6:18AM. Mom's blood pressure is dropping rapidly; Dr. Henry, currently on duty, says she may have a few hours at most.

So we're on our way over to say goodbye.

To the very end, Mom and her illness defy prediction.
