HOW CASCADE LOCKS GOT ITS NAME
An American Folk Tale

In the beginning, this section of the river was known as the Cascade Rapids. You can see what it looked like here. Since the Rapids were an impediment to boat traffic, eventually the Cascade Locks were built, allowing the rapids to be bypassed. The adjoining town took its name from the locks. In the 1930s, both Locks and Rapids were submerged when the Bonneville Dam was built. But the town remains.
