I've finally gotten to the point where I can start showing you pictures of my almost-daily walking route. You'll eventually see the entire route up to the Mile 13 marker, plus some "coming back" shots. I'm hoping my former students in Korea will be interested in these pictures... it will give them an idea of how very different my hometown is from Seoul.

what are the purpose of the ditches that run through out va neighborhoods? i see them only in va. why does md or dc not have these? or maybe they do and i did not notice? the way the streets are laid out are so different from state to state (yeah, even neighborhood to n.), its easy to know where you are just from photos, even though theyre the same area. but ive always wondered about the ditches. (are these even ditches? what do you call them?)
Open drainage ditches are usually a telling sign of how old and/or rural a neighborhood is, or was. The older or more suburban neighborhood, the more open ditches you'll see... unless the roads were recently improved and an underground storm drainage system was built. Preppin' hatte.
