They're not really Japanese. They seem to be Korean businesses run by (and largely for) Koreans.
What's weird to me is the stress on teriyaki. I can't recall a single teriyaki-themed restaurant in the northern Virginia area, whereas here in Washington there are teriyaki houses almost every other block in the business districts of nearly all of the cities I've passed through.
