Sorry, Augusta. I'm always walking a fine line between informing the readership and sacrificing Mom's privacy and dignity. I know she'd be mortified if I took a picture of her face while she's all bandaged up. While I'm not a very good photographer, I'm always sensitive to the language of hands, and I thought that this, a sneaky shot taken with my BlackBerry, might be OK to show the public.

Speaking of the language of hands, there's an amazing moment between two fantastic actors, Patrick Stewart and Alfre Woodard, in the 1996 movie "Star Trek: First Contact," in which Woodard's character, Lily, finally realizes that she's on board a ship from the future. The camera focuses on her hand, which is desperately gripping a console, and Picard (Stewart) slowly inserts his hand between hers and the console, prying her away from her fright and ushering her more fully into the adventure. That moment is, for me, one of the very best in that film, and it's one of the main reasons why "First Contact" is one of the top three Trek movies for me.

That's a powerful photo, man. Some pictures are worth a thousand words, while some could never be put into words.

Thanks for sharing.

Charles,

This is probably the most I've held Mom's hand since I was a very little kid.

Touching, Kevin, and I mean this sincerely . . . even with the pun.
